The scene of Sanja Matsuri (Sanja Festival) of Asakusa Shrine/Senso-ji Temple, which is one of the three biggest shrine festivals in Tokyo and held on the third weekend of May each year. The festival attracts around 2 million people during the three day period.
The photo shows men and women carrying Mikoshi (Portable Shrine).
Asakusa Shrine used to be a part of Sensoji Temple and is located in the compound of the latter, but was separated from the temple as a newly introduced policy to separate Shinto Shrine from Buddist Temple at the beginning of Meiji era (150 years ago).
